5 Reasons to Go Non-GMO

In awareness of Non-GMO Month Rise Bar wants to celebrate our right to know what is in our food. The more we learn, the more it motivates us to pressure our suppliers into providing only the very best ingredients for our bars! Follow our journey as we work with The Non-GMO Project to certify all of our Rise Bars!

  1. GMOs are not healthy. “Most developed nations do not consider GMOs to be safe. In more than 60 countries around the world, including Australia, Japan, and all of the countries in the European Union, there are significant restrictions or outright bans on the production and sale of GMOs. In the U.S., the government has approved GMOs based on studies conducted by the same corporations that created them and profit from their sale,” as reported by The Non-GMO Project.
  2. GMOs harm the environment. Many American’s are taking matters into their own hands by changing their purchasing choices knowing the risks that they introduce to their bodies and environment. According to The Non-GMO Project, “Over 80% of all GMOs grown worldwide are engineered for herbicide tolerance. As a result, use of toxic herbicides like Roundup has increased 15 times since GMOs were introduced. GMO crops are also responsible for the emergence of “super weeds” and “super bugs:’ which can only be killed with ever more toxic poisons like 2,4-D (a major ingredient in Agent Orange).”
  3. GMOs are a threat to farmers and the national food security. “Because GMOs are novel life forms, biotechnology companies have been able to obtain patents with which to restrict their use. As a result, the companies that make GMOs now have the power to sue farmers whose fields are contaminated with GMOs, even when it is the result of inevitable drift from neighboring fields. GMOs therefore pose a serious threat to farmer sovereignty and to the national food security of any country where they are grown, including the United States.” Cited by The Non-GMO Project.
  4. GMOs have a monopoly over food. It is estimated that over 90% of soy fields in America are planted with Monsanto GMOs, as reported by BestMeal; “In 1996, when Monsanto began selling Roundup Ready soybeans, only 2% of soybeans in the US contained their patented gene. By 2008, over 90% of soybeans in the US contained Monsanto’s GMO gene.”
  5. GMOs contaminate-FOREVER! GMOs cross pollinate and their seeds can travel. It is impossible to fully clean up our contaminated gene pool once infiltrated. The impact of GMOs in our agriculture is threatening the health of future generations.
