Our Favorite Summer Reads!

Pete • The visionary (Founder) "For the summertime, I definitely recommend narrative nonfiction books – books based on real life tales that read like a fiction adventure.  Combining this with a novel based on an outdoors theme only makes it more exciting and timely for the season."

The Emerald Mile

by Kevin Fedarko “This beautifully written book details a harrowing adventure through the Grand Canyon in the spring of 1983.  That year, record El Nino rainfall led to an unprecedented surge of water flow on the Colorado River.  Three local river guides took advantage of these river conditions to set a speed record over the course of a 275-mile stretch of treacherous rapids.  You will feel as if you are right next to these guides as they continue to conquer deadly obstacles.  Outdoor adventure at its finest!"

The inevitable: Understanding the 12 technological forces that will shape our future

by Kevin Kelly “This book Kevin Kelly predicts how technology will play a pivotal role in our lives over the next 30 years.  From virtual reality to artificial intelligence, this book gives a very detailed picture of what we can potentially expect.  It is amazing to see just how far we have come in such short period of time with technology from the personal computer, to the internet to wearable tech.  Technology has always fascinated me. Whether it’s an ancient technology innovative for its time or how technology will evolve in the next few years.  This book covers all of those aspects and gives a unique perspective.  It’s an interesting read and useful at the same time because it gives somewhat of a crystal ball view of what’s to come."

Christine • The Scheduler (and supplier of awesome office snacks!)

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

by Stieg Larsson “This book is a murder mystery thriller that kept me curious and turning the pages! It’s about the disappearance of Harriet Vanger, a member of one of Sweden’s wealthiest families. She vanishes without a trace forty years ago, and her aged uncle hires a journalist in attempts of revisiting the case. The plot twist in the end is dark and unexpected. I loved how this book kept me guessing as I was attempting to piece together the clues!"

#GirlBoss

by Sophia Amoruso “For summer, I am all about taking a break from school reading and getting business and life insight in a fun yet educational way. Girl Boss by Sophia Amoruso is a super insightful look into the business world; while explaining how to take full control of your life and the tricky situations life can sometimes throw your way, Sophia accounts for all the times in her life where she wasn’t quite aware of what she was supposed to be doing, but was laying the ground work for Nasty Gal to come into existence. This is one of my all-time favorite books because Sophia, who started a multimillion dollar company with zero debt, fearlessly shows how little she knew about the whole process and shares how much she had to learn by trying and improving her process over and over again. Not only is this book hilarious, but it gives real world business and life advice in a down to earth, talking to your best friend type of way."

Laura • The Generator

The Kite Runner

by Khaled Hosseini “This is one of my favorite summer books! The book takes place in both the US and Afghanistan, which not only expanded my knowledge and understanding of a different culture but also transported me to a completely different part of the world. The story itself is beautifully written despite the harshness of the actions depicted. Ultimately, it's a great story of love, betrayal and redemption."

Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear

by Elizabeth Gilbert “This book is great for thinking beyond our personal obstacles and opening/rediscovering living with and through our unique creative self. It challenges us to live into possibilities, soulfully and pragmatically."
